A Night Worker Medical is a health assessment designed to ensure employees working at night are fit for their role and not adversely affected by the demands of night shifts. Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, employers must offer health assessments to night workers to identify any health risks associated with working overnight.

What is a Night Worker?

A night worker is an employee who is scheduled to work at least three hours of his/her daily working time during night-time on most of the days on which he/she is scheduled to work. Night-time is defined as the period between 11 pm and 6 am. Employers must offer employees a free health assessment before they become a night worker. Employees do not have to accept undertaking this medical, but all information relating to this must be kept in writing.
